"And then one day, they quit…”
led by The Magnificent Four - Paul Cézanne, Paul Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh, and Georges Seurat, this is a period of time when artists broke away from the established movement in order to pursue their own style. For me it is a journey of self-exploration, thanks to this Big Breakout, we have the Nabis, especially Pierre Bonnard and Édouard Vuillard, the German Expressionists, the Fauves, Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque (1882–1963), and American modernists such as Marsden Hartley and John Marin. "I shut my eyes in order to see" — Paul Gauguin
What makes Post-impressionism super important is that despite the stylistic differences of the representative artists, they still shared the main focus, which stayed on the subjective vision of the artist. Art shifted from a window onto the world and instead became a window into the artist’s mind and soul. The far-reaching aesthetic impact of the Post-Impressionists influenced groups that arose during the turn of the 20th century, like the Expressionists, as well as more contemporary movements, like identity-related Feminist Art. It would have been fun to see how you can achieve the same using AI.

Post-impressionism key artists and related modifiers
As you already know, Dall-E 2 is pretty skilled in recognizing certain art movements and certain artists, but fame and popularity mean a lot when it comes to generating high-quality images. The more popular and more searched artists or movements are, the better images you’ll generate. Below I will share some of my key findings and visual representations.
Powering up your prompts
When it comes to generating images in a particular artist’s style, sometimes you need to add additional modifiers in order to get the best results. These modifiers can be Era, color palette, brushwork, mood, usage and etc. I tried to come up with a prompt that could be universally used for various different artists and movements (in this case Post-Impressionism).

prompt builder

It is also true that if you leave some space for the system to improvise, you may get jaw-dropping results, but we don’t always look for surprises, moreover, when you’re on a paid plan, you need to be sure that the generated image will be as close to the desired one, as possible. If we will follow this builder we can change basic prompts like
“windy and rainy summer day in a Gogh style” into “windy and rainy summer day, painting by Van Gogh, post-impressionism movement, expressive mood, circa 1880, oil on canvas, trending on Christie’s auction”

Prompts built in the same manner will help deal with complex ideas and styles.
Adjectives that will come in handy:
Here are some adjectives that I used in my prompts before and proved themselves to be helpful.
